Genevieve Ann Olson

Genevieve Ann Olson
Genevieve Ann Olson, 75, of Almena died Friday, October 6, 2017 at Care and Rehab - Cumberland. She was born October 3, 1942 in Cumberland, to Anthony and Lena (Curella) Marino. She was married in Cumberland on May 12, 1962 to Stuart Olson who preceded her in death on October 13, 2005.
One of her greatest achievements, aside from her family, was her selfless dedication to making the community a better place through volunteerism and service. Genevieve served on the Adult Leader’s Association of Barron Country 4-H, as well as general General Leader of the Poskin Jet’s 4-H Club for many years, where she positively impacted the lives of multiple generations.
Genevieve also served the Village of Almena through various organizations and events including the Almena Community Women, Lion’s Club, Cub Scouts, election worker, the Almena Family Fun Days, Junior Miss Almena, as well as led numerous community service engagement programs through the Almena Elementary School, which earned her the infamous title of “Label Lady” among faculty and students. However, one of her most altruistic acts of compassion was the endless hours of effort and coordination of benefit events to support local families in need of resources and support during times of hardship.
In addition to her contributions toward the community, Genevieve found enjoyment through several hobbies. Genevieve was identified by her loved ones as an elite Scrabble and crossword puzzle player, a fierce armchair Wheel of Fortune competitor, and “survey says” that she dominated at the Family Feud. Whether she was reading the local newspaper or several hundred pages into a New York Times Best Seller, Genevieve was passionate for literature and loved to share what she learned with her family and friends, as well as facilitated book reports to local youth at the Almena Elementary School to pass on her love for reading. Genevieve was also an artist in her own craft, cake decorating.  Throughout her life, Genevieve produced hundreds of beautifully crafted wedding, graduation, and birthday cakes, and her family and friends will be the first to admit that her frosting recipe was a masterpiece. She passed down her cake decorating skills to her daughter who continues to carry out the family tradition. Outside of games, reading and culinary skills, Genevieve had a love for all animals, and she was a strong advocate and contributor to the Humane Society of Barron County. Over her lifetime, Genevieve gave refuge to dozens of cats, dogs and many other furry friends who were nurtured to health from Genevieve providing shelter, food and love, even when her granddaughter continued to bring home new stray cats on a routine cadence.
Genevieve was a mother to us all, and she has touched the lives of so many individuals during her beautiful life. She will be missed everyday by her family and friends, and the world will forever be a better place for having had her a part of it. Genevieve’s family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Lingen of Cumberland Health Care, Kelley Strohschein, Director of Nursing of Cumberland Care & Rehab, and all the nurses and staff that provided outstanding quality of care, comfort, and support for Genevieve and her family during the past few weeks. Your contributions and efforts will forever be cherished by the family and friends of Genevieve Olson, a woman who changed the world for the better, and taught everyone in her life the true meanings of selflessness, perseverance, strength, love, and family.
