Maria Augusta ZumHofe, 98, of Cumberland died Friday, April 27, 2018 at Care and Rehab-Cumberland. She was born April 27, 1920 in Innsbruck, Austria to Vincenzo Santoro and Augusta Verdross. Although Austrian, Maria attended Italian school, so over her lifetime she became fluent in Italian, German and English, which led her to work as a telephone operator for a time. Maria loved children, and worked for several years as housekeeper and nanny.
After the war, she was introduced to an American soldier named Marvin ZumHofe, and they married in 1947 after a short courtship. In 1955 the couple adopted Maria’s six year old nephew Vincent, and around that time invited in Jon Bischoff, a foreign exchange student for a year, and they’ve kept in touch ever since.
Maria was no stranger to hard work, and even though her eyesight was poor it didn’t stop her from driving and working out of the home. She milked cows, tended to calves, worked the fields and drove tractor.
She is survived by her son, Vincent (Kathleen) ZumHofe of Ashland, several friends and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, her mother and twin brothers.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cumberland with Rev. John Miels officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Cumberland.
Skinner Funeral Home is serving the family.
