Softball goes 2-2 in weeks action

The Cumberland Beavers Softball Team went two and two last week, defeating Shell Lake 5-4 and Amery 10-9, while losing to Boyceville 12-0 and Glenwood City 5-4. The team next plays Bruce in a 5:00 game at Islander Park this Thursday night. Game time is 5:00 pm.
The week began on Tuesday with an exciting 5-4 victory over Shell Lake. The team trailed 4-3 entering the top of the seventh, when a Makayla Anderson single, an error, and a ground out left runners on second and third with one out. Freshman Payton Nyhus then delivered a two-run single up the middle, for what would be the game winner for Cumberland.
Nyhus then took over the pitchers position from Lauren Green and pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to cap off a big night with the pitching save. Green also pitched well, striking out 11 Laker hitters.
Anderson had three hits and Nyhus two for the winners.
Friday, Cumberland lost a heart breaking one-run game at Glenwood City. Cumberland struggled at the plate managing only four hits, while striking out 12 times. Nyhus went five innings to take the pitching loss, while having two of Cumberlands four hits in the game.
Saturday, the Beavers traveled to the Boyceville Tournament, where they defeated Amery by a run in game one. Leading by seven at one point, the Beavers had to hang on for the win. Again, Green took the pitching victory with relief from Nyhus, who took the save.
Thirteen walks by Amery pitchers helped Cumberland to the victory. Stephanie Walters and Lauren Green led Cumberland hitters with two safeties each. One of Greens’ safeties was a double.
The final game of the weekend ended in a 12-0 loss to Boyceville. A tired group of Cumberland hitters could only manage four safeties in the contest. Cumberland now readies for its home opener this Thursday against Bruce.
