Boys Basketball Team Wins One, Loses One
The Cumberland Boys Basketball team opened up WIAA Tournament action on Tuesday night at Mondovi.
A win there sends them back into action this Thursday, likely at Colfax. The Division 3 Regional Championship game is scheduled for this Saturday at 1:00 pm, in Menomonie.
Cumberland concluded the regular season part of their schedule by splitting a pair of games last week. They defeated Unity 63-60, before losing to Spooner on Friday night.
Sam Clark was on fire last Tuesday, as he scored 29 in the win at Unity. This included 17 in the first half, when Cumberland built a 41-31 lead.
The Eagles rallied to come within one point, late in the contest, before a Clark lay-up at the buzzer salted away the Beaver victory.
Cumberland received eight points and three assists from Brady Rose, seven points from Adam Bielmeier, and five points and three assists from Sam Larson, who also played aggressive defense off the bench. Sam Clark grabbed a team-high seven boards, while Vaughn Waite and Rose had six each.
The Beavers shot 26 for 51 from the floor and hit five of eight free throws in a good shooting night. They hit six of their 10 three-pointers in the contest.
Friday, the Beavers dropped a 63-45 decision to the Spooner Rails.
It was the last game of the HON season, as Northwestern reigns as the 2009-2010 champion with a perfect 14-0 record.
The Beavers raced to a big lead on Friday, holding a 19-6 advantage after one quarter of play. Unfortunately, they only scored 26 points the rest of the contest to fall to the neighbors to the north.
Cumberland only shot 34 percent in the game. Sam Clark scored 23 and Brady Rose 11, but the rest of the team could only combine for 11 points.
Rose had a team-high two assists, while Clark led the Beavers with eight boards.
Brian Lindblom, Spooner’s big man, led the Rails with 18. Eleven of his points came during the Rail’s second quarter comeback, which led to a 29-26 Spooner lead at halftime.
Girl’s Basketball Ends Regular Season
The Cumberland Girl’s Basketball team concludes the regular season part of their schedule this Friday with a home game against the state’s third-ranked Hayward Hurricanes.
The girls then start WIAA Tournament play next Tuesday with a game against Eau Claire Regis at Eau Claire. A victory there will send them into a Thursday night game on March 11, likely against Colfax.
Cumberland continued play last week with a 38-32 loss to Clear Lake and a 48-24 loss to Barron.
Cumberland was down 10-0 to Clear Lake before they scored last Tuesday. They outscored the Warriors the rest of the way, but could not catch up.
“We didn’t shoot well and gave up too many offensive boards in the contest,” said Coach Tim Gagner.
Jaime Lundequam led the Red and White with 11 points and three assists. Hillary Zimmer added seven points, and Carissa Mathison had a team-high eight rebounds.
Cumberland shot only 25 percent from the floor on an 11 for 44 night.
Thursday, Cumberland dropped a 48-24 decision to the Golden Bears of Barron.
“They are very athletic and have an outstanding player in Jordyn Hover,” said Coach Gagner.
Cumberland trailed by only four after quarter one, but had a rough second period, which led to a 27-10 Barron lead at half.
Emma Buckley led the hometown five with seven points, while also grabbing six rebounds. Natalie Gagner had five points, two assists, and two steals, while Mathison led the team with eight boards.
Cumberland was 10 for 38 from the floor, and only two for six from the free throw line in the contest.
